Fun facts about chickens
Chickens are close relatives of the red junglefowl from Southeast Asia, and there are more chickens on Earth than any other bird. A hen can lay around 250 to 300 eggs a year, and eggshell color depends on the breed, from white and brown to blue and green.
The red, floppy crest on top of a chicken's head is called a comb, and the flap under its beak is a wattle. Roosters crow at dawn, but they also crow throughout the day to tell other chickens where they are.
Coloring tips for chicken pictures
Real chickens come in white, golden buff, rusty red, black and speckled patterns. Make the comb and wattle bright red, the beak and legs yellow or orange, and baby chicks a soft lemon yellow. For a rooster's tail, try deep green, copper and black for a glossy, shimmering look.
