What to look for at each age

Two-year-olds mostly scribble, and that is exactly right. Give them one large, simple picture like a ball, an apple or a duck and celebrate the color on the page. Three-year-olds start aiming for shapes, so pick pages with a single subject and thick lines.

Four- and five-year-olds can begin staying inside the lines and enjoy simple scenes with two or three objects, like a cat next to a flower.

Building fine-motor skills

Coloring strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers that children later need to hold a pencil and write letters. It also builds hand-eye coordination and the ability to start and stop a movement on purpose.

Short, frequent sessions work better than long ones. Five or ten minutes of happy coloring is plenty for a toddler.

Helping little hands hold a crayon

Most toddlers start with a fist grip, holding the crayon in a whole hand. Chunky, egg-shaped or triangular crayons are easier to hold and encourage a more mature grip over time. Short, broken crayons are useful too, since they naturally lead kids to pinch with their fingertips.

Tape the page to the table so it does not slide, and choose washable crayons and markers for easy cleanup.

Learning colors and words

Coloring is a natural time to practice color names. Ask, "Which color do you want for the sun?" and name it together. Point out shapes and objects too: circle, leaf, wheel, tail. For a simple game, ask your child to find everything they colored red.

Teachers can pair pages with letters, seasons or a weekly theme, such as farm animals or fruit.

Printing and coloring online

Print at actual size on regular paper for crayons, or on cardstock if your child loves markers or paint sticks. Keep a few printed pages in a folder for quick, calm activities at home, in the car or at a restaurant.

The Online pages are designed so a single tap fills a whole shape, which makes them easy for small fingers on a phone or tablet. It is a mess-free option for travel and waiting rooms, but crayons on paper are still best for building hand strength.
