Fun facts about birds
There are more than 10,000 bird species. Hummingbirds can flap their wings up to 80 times a second and are the only birds that can fly backward, while a peacock's tail can hold around 200 shimmering feathers.
Many backyard birds, like robins and cardinals, sing to claim their territory and attract a mate, and each species has its own song.
Coloring tips for bird pictures
Real birds make great color guides: a cardinal is bright red with a black mask, a robin has an orange-red chest, a bluejay is blue and white, and parrots mix red, yellow, green and blue. For peacocks, layer teal, royal blue and gold, and add bright spots on the tail feathers.
